TUCSON, Ariz.—JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa has completed renovation of its guest rooms and suites, marking the latest phase of a property-wide transformation designed to strengthen the resort’s connection to the Sonoran Desert and southern Arizona.
The renovation encompasses 524 guest rooms and 51 suites, including a number of new suites intended to provide greater flexibility for the resort’s luxury clientele.
The redesigned accommodations blend the resort’s existing Southwest architecture with the natural character of the Sonoran Desert. A palette of earthy ochre, sage, rosemary, thyme, and cactus green draws inspiration from the colors and textures of nearby Tucson Mountain Park and Saguaro National Park.
Handcrafted details, patinated metals, natural hardwoods, canvas, mountain-inspired textiles, layered textures, carved elements, and custom artwork inspired by native pottery create a refined design connected to the region.
The updated rooms also emphasize views of the surrounding landscape. Beds have been positioned closer to windows, while expanded seating nooks with trundle sofas provide flexible space for relaxing, working, dining, or accommodating additional guests.
Bathrooms have been redesigned with spa-inspired walk-in showers, dramatic stone finishes, and spacious double vanities.
“The guest room transformation was designed to honor the rugged beauty and layered history of Starr Pass while creating accommodations that feel welcoming, refined, and deeply connected to the surrounding desert,” says Christy Thompson, design lead and principal of Ellis Adams Group. “By blending Southwest architecture with the warmth and simplicity of nature-inspired living, we created spaces that celebrate craftsmanship, comfort, and a genuine sense of place.”
The renovation also introduces new accommodation options for families. Family bunk-bed suites pair a king bed with twin bunk beds, providing a more flexible setup for travelers with children.
Guests staying in the new suites can also add the JW Camper Experience, an in-room offering featuring a child-sized play camper, a “campfire,” a sleeping bag, milk and chocolate chip cookies, an activity book, crayons, and optional keepsakes, including a children’s book and a plush toy cactus.
The resort has added 13 junior suites, while its executive suites have grown from 15 to 20. The executive suites feature separate living areas and private balconies. Four new Sonoran Starr Suites represent another addition to the resort’s accommodations. Each suite offers 1,275 square feet of interior living space and an 868-square-foot private terrace overlooking Starr Pass.
Designed in a residential style, the suites include a private king bedroom, two spa-inspired bathrooms, a living area, a wet bar, dining space, and an optional connecting guest room. Each suite also includes a premium telescope for viewing Tucson.
