Marriott International has announced a definitive agreement to acquire citizenM, a lifestyle hotel brand known for its tech-forward design and compact luxury, for $355 million. The move marks a continued push by Marriott into the select-service and lifestyle lodging space.
The citizenM portfolio includes 36 hotels with 8,544 rooms across more than 20 U.S., European, and Asia Pacific cities. The brand also has three hotels under construction, representing more than 600 additional rooms expected to open by mid-2026.
Upon completion of the deal, Marriott will assume ownership of the citizenM brand and its related intellectual property. The hotels, which the seller will own and operate, will enter long-term franchise agreements with Marriott. The transaction also includes the potential for earn-out payments of up to $110 million based on future growth, beginning in the fourth year after closing.
“We are very excited about our agreement with Marriott and look forward to this pivotal next step for our future growth,” said Rattan Chadha, founder and chairman of citizen. “I envisage this relationship will greatly enhance citizenM’s global reach and brand impact. Marriott as an organization shares our values and culture, and I am confident in their deep commitment in continuing our brand’s DNA into the future.”
Marriott expects the acquisition to generate approximately $30 million in stabilized annual fees from the current portfolio and pipeline. Subject to regulatory approval, the transaction is projected to close in 2025.
Founded in 2008, citizenM targets value-conscious travelers with a focus on technology, art, and compact, well-designed spaces. Amenities include smart in-room systems, communal living and working areas, and rooftop social spaces.
