SAN DIEGO—Hotel del Coronado has restored its historic Victorian building, marking the final phase of Blackstone Real Estate’s $550 million redevelopment of the National Historic Landmark.
The restoration project included updates to the hotel’s front porch, lobby, drive, Victorian guest rooms, garden courtyard, and event spaces, such as the Crown Room. Two new dining venues—Nobu Del Coronado and Veranda—were also introduced as part of the upgrade.
“From its earliest days, Hotel del Coronado has been a pioneer, continuously redefining the resort experience,” said JP Oliver, managing director of the hotel. “After this transformative journey, we are proud to set a new benchmark for resort excellence and continue exceeding expectations for a new era of guests and visitors.”
Each Victorian guest room has been reimagined with updated bathrooms, period-inspired design, and varied layouts that retain the character of the building. Design partners prioritized historical accuracy while integrating modern comfort.
Veranda, the restaurant, nods to the hotel’s original wrap-around porch with a locally sourced, California-style menu. Dishes include grilled artichokes, French dip sandwiches, and whole trout noisette. Nobu Del Coronado adds a global fine-dining option, serving signature Nobu dishes and locally inspired plates. The restaurant offers 156 seats, most of them outdoors, plus a sushi bar and a pagoda-style cocktail bar.
The Victorian Garden Courtyard has also been restored to its original layout. Historic walkways, pergolas, and a newly cast Naiad Queen Fountain now anchor the space, surrounded by era-specific landscaping.
In addition to the Victorian building, Blackstone’s resort-wide investment included new event venues, expanded dining, and guest accommodations, such as Shore House, and renovated rooms in The Cabanas and Views. The project also introduced the Southpointe event center, the reimagined Spa & Salon, an expanded fitness center, the Ice House Museum, and new event spaces.
The restoration preserved the hotel’s historic legacy while modernizing it for future generations. “We are so proud of the thoughtful collaboration that brought this more than $550 million project to fruition,” says Rob Harper, head of asset management Americas, with Blackstone Real Estate.
The multi-year project has created more than 300 resort jobs and thousands of construction jobs.
