LAS VEGAS—A massive American flag and red, white, and blue lighting display transformed Hoover Dam over Memorial Day weekend as leaders from Nevada and Arizona gathered to launch America250 celebrations and mark the start of the summer travel season.

The Memorial Day ceremony included remarks from Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson, Bureau of Reclamation acting regional director Genevieve Johnson, and Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) president and CEO Steve Hill.

“America’s promise has always been renewed by generations willing to make this country freer, safer, stronger, and more prosperous than they found it,” Hobbs said. “That is the promise of America. And there is no greater testament to that spirit than Hoover Dam.”

Hill added, “Hoover Dam represents the innovation, determination, and spirit that helped shape both the American Southwest and modern Las Vegas. As millions of travelers begin their summer journeys, this activation creates an unforgettable visual moment that honors Memorial Day, celebrates American achievement, and shines a national spotlight on southern Nevada this summer.”

Described by organizers as the most ambitious patriotic display ever attempted at Hoover Dam, the installation features a 300-foot-by-150-foot American flag suspended across the landmark and illuminated nightly through July 4, weather permitting. The display uses more than 550 automated LED lights, 126,200 feet of wire, and approximately 2,250 amps of power generated by Hoover Dam’s hydroelectric system. More than 80 people contributed to the project, which required five overnight installation shifts to minimize disruptions to visitors.

The flag, roughly the size of a football field and weighing approximately 2,000 pounds, was previously used during Indianapolis Colts and Las Vegas Raiders football games. The installation also required custom wind-engineered rigging systems designed for continuous operation in the canyon environment.

The activation also coincides with America250’s “Great American Road Trip” initiative, which encourages travel to iconic American destinations ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday in 2026. The patriotic display is part of a broader summer tourism campaign in Southern Nevada that will include eight consecutive Saturdays of fireworks shows across the Las Vegas Strip and downtown Las Vegas during June and July.

Constructed during the Great Depression between 1931 and 1936, Hoover Dam remains one of the nation’s most recognizable engineering achievements. More than 21,000 men worked on the project, which helped fuel the growth of southern Nevada.
