RENO, Nev.—Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) has officially broken ground on a new 10,000-seat arena, launching the first phase of a $1 billion redevelopment initiative—the largest private investment in Reno’s history.
The $435 million GSR Arena will span 300,000 square feet and include hospitality clubs, suites, and a central fan plaza. Once completed in fall 2027, it will host The University of Nevada, Reno Men’s Basketball games and approximately 95 events each year.
“This project represents a transformative moment for Reno and northern Nevada,” said Alex Meruelo, GSR owner. “Our investment reflects our confidence in the community and its potential as a destination for sports, entertainment, and hospitality.”
The initial construction phase includes a 2,800-space parking garage and a new community ice center next to the arena.
University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval said the project marks a significant partnership between the university and the city’s private sector. “When completed, the Grand Sierra Resort Arena will become our region’s most compelling entertainment and sports venue while providing Wolf Pack Athletics with a dazzling home court that will be second to none,” he said.
According to a financial analysis by Hunden Partners for the City of Reno, the development is expected to generate between $850 million and $1.135 billion in direct economic activity, with a total projected benefit of up to $1.8 billion over nearly three decades.
Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve described the project as a sign of continued growth for the city. “It represents the kind of forward investment that propels Reno forward,” she said.
The arena is part of a long-term plan that includes expanded parking, new recreation and entertainment amenities, and future residential and hotel projects on the Grand Sierra property.
