The Events Industry Council has launched a new benchmark with the introduction of the updated Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) exam, aligned with the 2025 CMP International Standards (CMP-IS). The revised framework reflects industry changes, including sustainability, technology integration, and outcome evaluation.
The CMP designation is recognized worldwide by more than 13,000 professionals across more than 55 countries. It certifies expertise in strategic planning, operations, risk management, stakeholder engagement, and emerging domains in event management.
New standards
More than 1,000 volunteer subject matter experts worldwide contributed to the update through job-task analyses, competency mapping, and content review. Heather Seasholtz, CMP fellow and chair of the CMP Governance Commission, said the process ensures the framework is “relevant, practical, and globally informed for the future of events.”
Key updates
The revised CMP-IS, released in January 2025, introduces a new Sustainability and Social Impact domain, expanded Technology Integration coverage, and a sharper focus on Evaluation and return on investment (ROI). Risk Assessment has been updated to support more resilient and inclusive event design, and the standards have been aligned with global best practices.
The exam underwent beta testing in April and May 2025, followed by a two-month scoring blackout. It is now live, with automatic extensions through November 1, 2025, for candidates affected by the outage.
History
Since 1985, the CMP designation has required candidates to meet eligibility criteria and pass a psychometrically sound exam. The updated version retains the multiple-choice format, including scenario-based questions to test applied knowledge and strategic decision-making.
The updated EIC Manual reflecting the new CMP-IS will be released in late 2025 or early 2026. Interim materials are available, and a transition period will allow candidates to prepare with the updated content.
“The CMP is more than a certification; it represents a commitment to doing the work well and doing it right,” said Seasholtz. “This update ensures the credential keeps pace with our industry and continues to reflect the skills and leadership we need to move forward.”
