NORTHERN
ExploreElko.com; @ExploreElko—Tucked away in northeastern Nevada, Elko seamlessly blends rich Western heritage with modern comforts, making it an unforgettable destination for meetings and events. “Elko offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern amenities,” says Michelle Cromwell, marketing and advertising manager for Elko Convention & Visitors Authority. “As a hidden gem, it provides an authentic Western experience, from cowboy culture and a historic downtown to outdoor adventures and unique events like the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. This distinctive character, combined with its convenient location and personalized service, makes Elko a memorable and sought-after destination for meeting and event planners.”
Elko has approximately 2,500 lodging rooms. Some of the city’s top hotel properties include the 378-guest room Holiday Inn Express & Suites Elko, an IHG Hotel; 354-guest room Shutters Hotel Elko; 1,222-guest room Best Western Elko Inn; 369-guest room Home2 Suites by Hilton Elko; and 654-guest room Hampton Inn Elko. One of Elko’s most significant recent developments in the hospitality scene, Cromwell shares, is the Elkotel. The city’s newest hotel, Elkotel offers modern accommodations, including 77 guest rooms, meeting spaces, a gym, and a restaurant. Parking is free at the property as well. “It is a great option for business and leisure travelers,” Cromwell says.
Beyond hotel meeting spaces, the city features other facilities specifically for hosting meetings and conferences. Elko Convention Center includes approximately 11,000 square feet of flexible exhibit and meeting space to accommodate up to 500 guests indoors, along with an outdoor patio and large lawn for all types of events. Adjacent to Elko Convention Center is the multi-use Elko Conference Center, which boasts 19,000 square feet of space and can be configured to meet the needs of many different events and meetings. The two centers offer 30,000 square feet combined and can accommodate up to 1,500 attendees. Also on site is Laurena Moren Theater, which has a stage and an auditorium seating 923 guests.
Elko offers non-traditional meeting spaces as well. In addition to its art and local history exhibits, Northeast Nevada Museum has 20,000 square feet of exhibit space and can be used for such events as receptions and banquets. The Elko Senior Center features 10,000 square feet of space, which can be used for meetings, workshops, and parties, Cromwell adds.
Elko’s recent infrastructure upgrades, especially in roadways and highways, have significantly boosted accessibility and streamlined regional connectivity, Cromwell says. These enhancements make it easier than ever for attendees to navigate the area, whether arriving by car or via Elko Regional Airport’s (EKO) daily flights. While public transportation within the city is available, planners may find it more practical to coordinate rental vehicles or shuttle services for group travel to ensure seamless transportation throughout the area, Cromwell adds. “Public transportation options in Elko are limited,” she explains. “While there are bus services within the city, relying on public transit for extensive travel may not be feasible.”
Elko offers meeting attendees and their families a captivating mix of outdoor adventure, cultural heritage, and small-town charm. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the breathtaking Ruby Mountains, perfect for hiking, camping, fishing, and even winter sports like skiing and snowshoeing. Culture lovers can dive into Elko’s rich cowboy traditions with rodeos, Western-themed events, and the renowned National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Foodies will savor the area’s Basque culinary heritage, featuring hearty, family-style dining experiences. Downtown Elko provides a vibrant setting with art galleries, historic buildings, and unique shops, while attractions like the Northeastern Nevada Museum and scenic Lamoille Canyon offer opportunities for learning and relaxation.
